When will inflation in Japan show up?

Posted on 10:05 by Unknown
People are wondering if the money printing experiment in Japan is actually going to be inflationary or not. As we all know, the inflation rate is measured by the CPI (consumer price index). If the CPI goes up, we have inflation.

The CPI of Japan consists of the items given in Chart 1. The items with the most weight in it are food, housing, transportation and fuel. Therefore, it is important to watch food and energy costs as well as housing prices in Japan.

Chart 1: Items in CPI of Japan (2010)
First, let's look at food prices. Zero Hedge reports that McDonald's has hiked the price of a burger in Japan by 20%. If we consider this price hike as a proxy for the overall food price in Japan, we could see a significant increase in the CPI coming.

Second, we take a look at the Japanese housing market. The Japanese housing market has always been in a decline for the last 15 years, but now we see signs of stabilization. Housing prices are about to rise in the coming years. In the metropolitan areas for example, we have seen land prices go up at an annual rate of 11.5% in 2012.

Third, fuel and energy costs are going through the roof. With the Fukushima disaster, a part of the nuclear energy had to be diverted to fuel. In fact, LNG imports soared to 86.9 million tonnes. Added to this disaster, the yen weakened considerably in 2013 which led to rising fuel and energy costs. We can witness this in the rising LNG prices in Japan. These events are a very good example of why a weaker yen is not a good thing, instead it creates an environment where people's purchasing power declines. In this case the price of the imports of fuel are going up and this will add to the trade deficit of the country. The statistics bureau of Japan recently put out the latest numbers on the CPI. Fuel was contributing the most to the rising costs of living.
Table 1: Consumer Prices: Change from the Previous Year in 2012

So basically, we see that the 3 biggest components of the CPI are going up in Japan. It would surprise me if the CPI would decline in the coming months.

Central Bank Balance Sheets: U.S., Eurozone, Japan

Posted on 23:10 by Unknown
This page is created to monitor the balance sheet of the U.S., Eurozone and Japan.

There is a strong correlation between the price of gold and the expansion of the total sum of all central bank balance sheets in the world.

ECB = blue
U.S. Federal Reserve = red
Bank of Japan = green

(The Chinese balance sheet is not included in this graph as it is not available on FRED)

Why you shouldn't buy Japanese equities

Posted on 02:12 by Unknown
This is why you shouldn't buy Japanese stocks to profit on it as an American citizen. As the Nikkei goes up, so does the Yen decline against the USD.

So your profit is zero.

The Significance of Japan's Bond Buying Program

Posted on 10:46 by Unknown
On April 4, 2013, Japan announced one of its boldest quantitative easing programs in history. The Japanese central bank said it would buy $530 billion of Japanese government bonds per annum, which is $44 billion per month. This amount is comparable to the $45 billion the Federal Reserve is printing to buy U.S. longer-term treasuries. But if you compare this amount to the balance sheet and the GDP of both countries, we get a different picture.

The U.S. currently has a balance sheet of $3.2 trillion while the Japanese central bank has a balance sheet of $1.8 trillion, which is half the Federal Reserve balance sheet. U.S. GDP is at $16 trillion, while Japanese GDP is at $6 trillion, which is less than half the U.S. GDP. Still, Japan is buying an equal amount of domestic government bonds at ultra-low yields of 0.45% on the 10 year Japanese government bonds (Chart 1).

Chart 1: Japanese 10 Year Treasury Yield
I cannot stress enough how important this new Japanese program is to the precious metals market, bond market and currency markets, as these are not insignificant numbers. In a previous post I pointed out that Japan had a very dire fiscal situation with record budget deficits, interest payments and a large deficit to outlay ratio. Well, the numbers have gotten worse according to the latest report of the ministry of finance of Japan.

To get into the abysmal numbers, go here.

Kyle Bass: Myron Scholes Global Markets Forum

We need to understand what is happening in Japan, because it is a premonition of what's to come in the U.S.

Added Kyle Bass as Guru

Posted on 16:28 by Unknown
I decided to add Kyle Bass to the list of gurus on this blog.

He seems like a smart guy, knowing a lot about debt. And he is pro-gold.

Most important is that he says Japan is going to have a bond bubble crisis as early as next year (2013). I talked about this here and it shows that revenue of Japan is quickly going down, while interest expense is just being kept low by printing yen to buy government bonds. But, the interest payments as a percentage of tax revenues is rising, even when rates are being kept low. I said there is a point where it doesn't work anymore.

That point has arrived: The problem is, if the current account goes negative, which is already happening now, the fiscal deficit can't be maintained any longer (previously, the current account surplus was higher than the fiscal deficit. Not anymore now). Meaning, the tax revenues will eventually all go to the payment of interest on debt.

Result: implosion of Japanese bond market and nominal rise of Japanese equities. Japanese pension funds will buy huge amounts of gold. (BTW, Nomura has already surged a lot, maybe it's time to cash in the profits)

Japanese Equities Outperforming Japanese Bonds

Posted on 01:20 by Unknown
As I warned everyone already in March 2012 in this article, it is finally happening. Japanese equities are indeed outperforming Japanese bonds and we can see this event starting in one of the most important equities brokers, Nomura Holdings (Chart 1). In my previous article I said that Nomura Holdings would flourish as it is the primary brokerage service in Japan.

Nomura, which pays a dividend that's higher than the 10 year Japanese bond yield, has skyrocketed just recently and is going to keep going upwards according to me.
Chart 1: Nomura Holdings

Keith Fitz-Gerald and Chris Martenson on Japan

Posted on 05:20 by Unknown
Keith Fitz-Gerald talks about Japan in this interview with Chris Martenson.

The problem in Japan is its enormous government debt, which is 250% of GDP. Its population is very old, 30% of the population is going to die by 2050 and there are very few newborns.

He expects the yen to fall due to these dire prospects (200 USD/yen), but notes that the only reason why the yen (and the dollar) are so strong these days is because these two currency markets are the only markets big enough to absorb all this safety haven liquidity (listen at 28:00). More so, Europe has been the event that made investors flee in Japan and the U.S., giving them a little more time to kick the can.

Significance of Rhodium Prices on the automotive industry

Posted on 03:23 by Unknown
Rhodium is a metal in the platinum group metals group (PGM) that nobody really knows about in the investor world. It isn't traded online through futures, while gold, silver and platinum does. You can only buy this metal physically through dealers which makes this metal perfectly unmanipulated. So I am very keen on using rhodium prices to find correlations in the macro-economic world as they are a very reliable indicator.

Rhodium prices are extremely inelastic, which means that its price is very dependant on supply and demand. If there is no supply and a lot of demand for rhodium, the price will skyrocket. The rhodium market is very small compared to the gold market and will have high volatility and low liquidity. For example, prices in 2003 were below $US 1000/ounce, but went up to $US 10000/ounce, which is a ten fold increase (Chart 1).

Chart 1: Historical Rhodium Price
